Dr. Willie Underwood III is a board-certified urologist and health policy expert with over 20 years of experience in urologic surgery, including a decade specializing in robotic procedures. He was elected to the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees in 2019 and served as Chair in 2023. As a board member at Health2047, he contributes expertise in health system transformation, regulatory policy, and clinical innovation.
A recognized leader in health care policy and disparities, Dr. Underwood has served on national and regional committees, including as a board member of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western and Northeastern New York and the Joint Commission. He has also chaired the AMA Council on Legislation and held leadership roles in the Erie County Medical Society and the Medical Society of the State of New York.
In addition to his clinical and policy work, Dr. Underwood has co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications, secured NIH research funding, and holds patents for a prostate cancer biomarker. He co-founded KAPS Biotechnology LLC, which is advancing novel diagnostic tools.
Dr. Underwood earned his BS from Morehouse College, his MD and MSc from SUNY Upstate Medical University, and an MPH from the University of Michigan.
